Carleton’s ‘Black Prophet’ was first issued in Dublin University Magazine, Vols. 27 & 28, Dublin 1846. The story is set just before the onset of the famine of 1847 and vividly portrays the Irish landscape, complete with rich dialogue and colorful character.

‘Wood Leighton’ was first published in three volumes in 1836 & was Mary Howitt’s first full-length adult novel: a closely-observed portrait of life in a country village.
