A significant one-volume gathering of his dramatic work, it collects the plays Yeats intended for both “hearers and readers,” most of which were performed at the Abbey Theatre in Dublin. The collection spans his career, from early works like The Countess Cathleen (1892) to later plays such as The Words upon the Window-Pane (1934).

The dedication to Maud Gonne belongs specifically to one of its most important plays, The Countess Cathleen, which was written explicitly with her in mind.
