The Picture of Dorian Gray. London: Ward Lock, (1891). First Edition, First Issue (with misprint on page 208: ‘nd’ instead of ‘and’). Pp vii, 334, uncut. Original bevelled boards, upper cover with gilt lettering atop a pattern of ten gilt butterflies (designed by Charles Ricketts), original parchment spine with title and devise stamped in gilt to tail. Neat repairs to upper part of joints, but overall a fine bright copy. [Together With] The first printing of The Picture of Dorian Gray in “Lippincott’s Monthly Magazine” Ward, Lock and Co., July, 1890. Pp, 20, advertisements (including 16 for Ward and Lock), additional advertisement for the “August Number of Lippincott’s Magazine” tipped in before p.3, partially unopened, publisher’s wrappers printed in red and black, spine with some loss to lower section (including 6 letters), covers frayed at fore-edge with minor losses, corners rubbed, small tear to lower cover.

The two works housed together in morocco-backed solander box, gilt lettering to spine.

FINE COPY OF THE FIRST EDITION IN BOOK FORM TOGETHER WITH THE STORY’S FIRST APPEARANCE IN PRINT AS ISSUED IN LIPPINCOTT’S MAGAZINE

Complete with all points, including misprint on p.208. The art-nouveau-style ‘butterfly’ design on upper board, and the typography of half-title, title, and preface are all by Charles Ricketts.

Originally published in Lippincott’s Magazine in July 1890, Dorian Gray appeared in book form  the following year with six new chapters, many alterations and much additional matter.
