A novel by Grace Rhys (1865-1929), an Irish writer and poet, set in rural Ireland in the 1860s. The story concerns John O’Gara, the elderly rightful heir to an estate cheated from his family, and his impoverished existence in the village of Lisnover.

Featuring a striking frontispiece by the renowned Irish artist Jack B. Yeats (brother of the poet W. B. Yeats) . Yeats was a prolific illustrator of books with Irish themes during this period, and his work significantly enhances the appeal of this first edition.
