The Shanachie was started as a magazine primarily for Irish writers, Irish artists, and an Irish public, with art content by the leading Irish artists of the day. The first two numbers appeared in 1906, and contained contributions from George Bernard Shaw, W.B. Yeats, Lady Gregory, J.M. Synge, A.E., Elinor Monsel, Stephen Gwynn, and many others. It was proposed to continue the publication with the same object, and that each number would contain one or two articles dealing with literary or other events of current interest. In all only six numbers were published. Illustrated with drawings by Jack B. Yeats, John B. Yeats, William Orpen et al.

Volume Two contains the first appearance of “Discoveries” by W. B. Yeats [Wade p. 370], “The Royal Hibernian Academy and Home Rule in Art” and “The Rationale of Art” by John B. Yeats with four contributions by John M. Synge, five contributions by Padraic Colum & “The Doom of La Traviata” by Lord Dunsany, etc.
