First published privately in 1897, this is the second Shakespeare Head Press edition.
Wade notes that “On or about June 28,1916 the remainder of this edition was transferred to Macmillan. These copies were bound in grey-green cloth, lettered in black on front cover.”.
These two stories from Yeats’ Red Hanrahan series were written during the height of Yeats’ fascination with the occult. At the time the work was very controversial due to its focus on mysticism and the apocalypse.
