The Wild Swans At Coole. London: Macmillan, 1919. First Edition. Pp ix, 114, untrimmed. Blue cloth covers with design and lettering in gilt to upper cover and spine, by Sturge Moore. Light wear to spine ends, but overall a nice sharp copy.
The first trade edition, preceded by the Cuala Press limited edition of 400 copies, published in 1917. In addition to the twenty-nine pomes which appeared in the Cuala Press issue, this edition expanded to forty poems and included the first book appearances of ‘In Memory of Major Robert Gregory’ and ‘An Irish Airman Foresees His Death.’
Coole Park, the renowned country estate of Lady Gregory, was a gathering place for the luminaries of the Irish Literary Revival. Just three miles from Yeats’s home at Thoor Ballylee, it became a source of inspiration for writers such as Yeats, O’Casey, Synge, and Shaw. The house and its serene landscapes were immortalised in Yeats’s poems The Wild Swans at Coole and Coole Park, while the imagery and spirit of the estate permeate much of his poetic work.
