Regarded as one of the great collections of Yeats’ poems, it was the next new volume after 1928’s The Tower, and published when Yeats was 68 years old. A collection of 64 poems written in the late 1920s and early 1930s, the title refers to the stairs in Thoor Ballylee, Yeats’s Norman tower in Co Galway, and figuratively to the path towards death on which the poet twists and turns.
