The second translation of ‘Ulysses’ following the German edition of 1927. Joyce was involved in the French translation of Ulysses, which in fact had begun even before the first (English) edition was published by Shakespeare & Co. (February 1922). Jacques Mechin, for instance, translated the final episode Penelope late in 1921 for Valery Larbaud’s famous lecture on Ulysses oranised by Sylvia Beach and Adrienne Monnier for 7 December 1921. It was Mechin who, engaged on Molly Bloom’s soliloquy which ends the novel, added the famous final affirmative “oui” a suggestion which Joyce, after a discussion lasting several hours, then decided to adopt in the original version.
