Ulysses. A Critical and Synoptic Edition. New York: Garland, 1984. Black and green cloth bindings with gilt lettering and a Homeric bow in gilt to front covers, a very good set housed in slipcase.

Containing notes and commentary by Hans Walter Gabler, Wolfhard Steppe, Claus Melchior, and others, in which they report and detail over 5000 printing errors and other divergences from Joyce’s original manuscript, including points of orthography and punctuation to words, phrases, part-sentences, sentences and paragraphs. The editors point out, for example, that a typist of the Episode 16 section decided to remove hundreds of commas from the Joyce manuscript in an attempt to make sense of it!

The result of this scholarly work is a new text of Ulysses designed “to replace the text made public in the book’s first printing and every subsequent printing since 1922.” Joyce was “extremely irritated” by all the errors in the first edition and would welcome this definitive and beautiful replacement, a work of seven years by many scholars.
