The first Bodley Head edition was printed in 1936, in a limited issue of 1000 numbered copies with the trade editions following from 1937 onwards. The appearance of this edition marked the official acceptance of the novel in Britain. The text is based on that of the Olympia Press edition, revised by Stuart Gilbert to Joyce’s instructions.
The Bodley Head editions include two appendices bringing together the material from the 1934 Random House edition relating to the lifting of the ban on the book in the United States. The text of the injunction granted in favour of Joyce against the publisher Samuel Roth and the text of the ‘International Protest’ against Roth’s unauthorised serialisation of Ulysses, with a full list of the signatories including Virginia Woolf, T.S. Eliot and Ernest Hemingway.
