The thirteen volumes of the Zeitschrift für celtische Philologie, published between 1897 and 1921 constitute the foundational archive of modern Celtic studies.

Founded by Kuno Meyer and Ludwig Christian Stern, this journal did not merely record the field, it largely created it, establishing the methodological standards and publishing the primary texts upon which the discipline still rests.

A German-born Celticist, Meyer influence extended beyond the journal. In 1903, he co-founded the School of Irish Learning in Dublin with John Strachan, addressing what he saw as a critical shortage of trained native Irish scholars. His sensitive translations from Old Irish directly inspired W. B. Yeats and the Anglo-Irish literary revival, creating an international audience for early Irish literature. The journal also played a role in the standardisation of modern Irish prose.
