The author was an acquaintance of the Rev. James MacDevitt whose guide-book ‘The Donegal Highlands,’ (a detailed account of his travels throughout County Donegal in the latter half of the nineteenth century) was the inspiration of this work. Fox comments: “I have tramped to almost every place mentioned in it, and his accounts of folk-lore confirmed in their respective situations by the mouth of the peasantry.”
