The Happy Prince And Other Tales. Illustrated by Walter Crane and Jacomb Hood. London: David Nutt, 1889. Second Edition. Pp,116. Publisher’s parchment boards, lightly browned, occasional spotting to text, bookplate to front pastedown; generally very good.
Walter Crane illustrated the full-page plates (including the frontispiece), and Hood created the in-text illustrations for the chapter headings and the front cover.
A collection of five stories first published in May 1888 (The Happy Prince, The Nightingale and the Rose, The Selfish Giant, The Devoted Friend, and The Remarkable Rocket). Wilde wrote to George Kersley on publication: “I am very pleased that you like my stories – they are studies in prose, put for Romance’s sake into a fanciful form; meant partly for children, and partly for those who have kept the childlike faculties of wonder and joy, and who find in simplicity a subtle strangeness.'”
