Dedicated by the author to W.B. Yeats, the play is a dramatisation of the life of Charles Stewart Parnell from his first meeting with Kitty O'Shea, to his downfall and death. It was first performed at the Abbey Theatre, Dublin, in October 1934. This first printed edition contains a forty-page preface on the historical background to the play.
